OC Parks January Calendar of Events

Here are some highlights from the OC Parks January Calendar of events, if you are looking for hiking ideas or other outdoor events in the month of January.

January 1 - How Native Americans Used the Local Wilderness
9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
To the Native Americans who lived in Orange County, the wilderness constituted a one-stop grocery, pharmacy and hardware store. Early European pioneers found their own uses for local and introduced plants, and now science is finding out more about potential valuable medicines in our wild back yard.

January 4 – Birding Walk
8 – 11 a.m.
Join Naturalist Mike Clayton on a bird walk at Riley Wilderness Park. All levels of birders are welcome. As a wildlife sanctuary, Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park is home to an abundant number of native species of birds and mammals. Trails meander through old groves of Western Sycamores and Coast Live Oaks. The park has many acres of rolling hills with grasslands and Coastal Sage Scrub habitats. Come prepared for a morning of exploring this delightful park and its abundant bird life. Wear shoes with good traction, hat and sunscreen.

January 5 – Fitness Hike
8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Raise your heart rate and your spirits on this strenuous, fast-paced, 6.5-mile hike over steep and uneven terrain (700-ft. elevation gain) with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers.

January 5, 12, 19 – Five Senses of Science and Nature
8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Explore the beauty and wonder of the only Redwood grove in Orange County. Fun activities for kids of all age groups. Home school groups and small group programs. Learn to uncover the five senses; deer ears, owl eyes, raccoon touch, sounds and smell of the redwood trees.

Special Instructions: From the 57 freeway, exit on Lambert and go East just after crossing Valencia, the park is 1.4 miles down on your right at Santa Fe, turn right into the park. The program starts at the Nature Center, which is at the east end of the park.  

January 5, 12, 19, 26 – Tideland Tykes

Join Preserve staff for a fun-filled parent and child experience that may include arts and crafts, story telling, hands on activities or outdoor nature walks. Come prepared for an exciting outdoor experience!

January 6 – Explore the Plants on the Trail to Barbara’s Lake

Join us on a wonderful morning walk to Orange County’s only natural lake while learning about our native California plant life. This 2-mile leisurely like will be led by Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalists.

January 6 – Wild Tales

Visit with Preserve staff for story-telling fun! After a story, learn more about the natural history of the Bay through crafts, hands-on activities and nature walks. Come prepared for an exciting outdoor experience!

January 7 – Limestone Canyon Wilderness Access Day
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Trail lovers, this one is for you! Enjoy self-guided access in magnificent Limestone Canyon. Designated trails will be open for self-guided hiking, biking, and equestrian use from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is limited, however, and later attendees may be turned away from the event. Carpooling is strongly encouraged. Trail routes vary in distance and level of difficulty. Please plan accordingly. Choices range from easy one-hour walks to strenuous 15-mile cardio hikes. Visiting “The Sinks” is a 9-mile round trip hike over moderate terrain. The new Shoestring Trail Loop is approximately 5 miles long, and includes some steep elevation gain. Location: Augustine Staging Area, south side of Santiago Canyon Road, between Silverado and Chapman.

January 7 – Birding Basics with Ranger Portia
8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Explore the diverse bird populations of Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve with Ranger Portia on the first Saturday of each month. From seasonal migratory species to year-round residents, birders of all ages will enjoy a morning outdoors on these informative, yet fun-filled walks.

January 7– Geology Hike
8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Enjoy unspoiled canyon views and learn about the geology of this area. The rocks and fossils reveal fascinating stories about the park’s ancient environments. Meet at the Nix Nature Center to see the new geology exhibit and then take a highly interpretive 4.8-mile hike (700-ft elevation gain), both over steep and uneven terrain. This highly interpretive hike is led by Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalists.

January 8 – Second Sunday Restoration Program
9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Join Preserve staff and other volunteers in enhancing the Bay’s habitat for local wildlife. Activities may include non-native plant removal, planting natives, watering trash cleanup and Butterfly Garden maintenance. No experience is necessary; water, snacks and tools are provided.

January 10 – Easy Nature Hike to the Oaks

January 13 – A Long Winter’s Night Hike
5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Come see Peters Canyon Regional Park in a completely different setting, in the dark! Park Rangers will lead a starlit hike showcasing the natural wonders that can only be seen at night. This hike is the last hike in the “Friday Night Hike” series. The Long Winter’s Night Hike will feature many fun activities, including: a fun craft for children age 6 and up, an interpretive animal presentation, hot cocoa and cookies, a hike through the wilderness area. This is an outdoor event. Please dress warm, wear good walking shoes and bring a flashlight.

January 14 – Second Saturday of the Month Trail Day

Come join the Park Rangers and other enthusiastic volunteers as we perform work on our trails. You will work with our trail leaders to remove non-native plants, plant new native plants and/or repair a trail within our park.

January 14 – Operation: Restore Borrego Canyon
9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Help fight the good fight by removing invasive plants along the creekbed of shady Borrego Canyon. Your efforts will help enhance the habitat making it possible for the native plants and animals to better thrive. The Borrego Canyon Trail is approximately 1 ½ miles long and relatively flat; however, there will be some exertion required for invasive plant removal so a minimal level of fitness is desired. No restoration experience necessary – tools and guidance will be provided.

January 16, 23, 30 – Listening to Nature and Meditating in Stillness
4 – 5:30 p.m.
Learn to calm your mind and body while walking in natural, peaceful surroundings with resource specialist Laura Cohen. Then, learn techniques for sitting meditation. It’s easy and can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and make you slower to react negatively to people and events.

Helping Our Children to Succeed – with Rosie’s Garage and Advance! Outstanding Orange County projects share their secrets to educational success for families. Held in conjunction with “A Class Action” exhibit and the Museum of Teaching and Learning. Programs Scheduled: 9:30 a.m.: Focus on our young children. 11:15 a.m.: Help teens find the best path.

January 22 – Wildlife Watch  
12:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Join Preserve Staff as we survey the populations of Upper Newport Bay’s amazing diverse flora and fauna. Together, we will investigate the dynamics of our wildlife in this urban setting with focus on endangered and threatened species. Participants will be assigned to small survey teams with a preserve leader to scan regions throughout the park. This program is designed for ages 15 and up. However, younger nature enthusiasts are welcome with adult supervisors to participate on special survey teams designed especially for them. Come prepared for long walks with shoes able to transverse uneven terrain, plus water and sunblock. Service learning hours available for students.
