There is a great event going on tomorrow, Saturday March 5, 2011, at Mile Square Regional Park. O.C. Parks is putting on a Free Kid's Fishing Derby that will be a fun event for the entire family to do. Here are the details for the event:
This looks to be a great event for the whole family to enjoy. Furthermore, the weather is going to be perfect for the event tomorrow. We have provided some pictures that we took today when the parks service was stocking the lake. Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen was also present for the stocking and will be there tomorrow. Both Ashley and I noticed that there were some good size fish that were being put into the lake. We were told there was a total of 1,600 pounds of fish that were stocked in the lake. The event is being held at Miles Square Park's North Lake. This looks to be a great affordable family event which will be fun for the kids to enjoy. Ashley and I would like to thank the people at the Orange County Parks for lettings us come and take pictures of the fish stocking to share with our readers.
For those who don't know much about Mile Square Park, it offers a variety of activities to those who visit it. There are plenty of areas for a picnic as well as places to walk and enjoy the scenery of the park with its two lakes. The O.C. Park service has also developed (and is working on expanding and improving) a 20 acre nature area. The nature area showcases Southern California native plants such as coastal sage scrub, chaparral, grasslands, dessert creosote scrub and valley woodlands. The area also features a riparian area, freshwater marsh, and a hummingbird and butterfly garden. Future, development of the area will include a sensory garden and a display on the early use of native plants. The nature area is a perfect place to visit with the kids and it will only get better as they continue to restore and improve the area over the next year or so. They have even begun to offer people the opportunity to camp overnight in the area. We will write a formal post on Mile Square Park later this weekend.
Registration goes from 7am to 8:30am. The actual Fishing Derby is held from 9am to 12pm. There are prizes for those in their given age group who catch the biggest fish, winners and prizes to be announced after the conclusion of the fishing derby. There are 3 age categories. The first category is for those who are 7 years old and under, the second category is from 8 to 11 year olds, and the last category is from 12 to 15 year olds.

There is also a fishing clinic which is hosted by the California Department of Fish and Game Courtesy of the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Sponsors of the event are Orange County Parks, Walgreens (North Orange County Stores), California Department of Fish and Game, and Fishing in the City & California Passport. Parking inside the park costs $5, but there is also some street parking which is available for free. There are a limited amount of fishing rods that will be available for loan with proper identification. Normal California fishing regulations apply.
