One of the places that Ashley and I visited during our trip to Kauai was the Waimea Canyon Lookout area. This is not necessarily a true hike, but is more of a place to walk around and view the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. There are plenty of hiking trails around this location if you are looking for great hikes. Waimea Canyon is truly an amazing sight to see and is a must do for visitors to Kauai.
Directions to trailhead: From the junction of Waimea Canyon Drive and Kokee Road in Waimea Canyon drive north approximately 1.5 miles to the location were Kokee road splits to a paved road. At this junction take a right and go to the parking area. You will see the short paved trail that goes to the overlook area. There is no cost to park at the trailhead.
Description of Hike: This is not much of a hike, but is more of a sight seeing walk that the whole family can do together. The total mileage roundtrip is less that 0.2 miles with minimal elevation gain. There are plenty of hiking trails around this location, many of which offer great views of Waimea Canyon. If you are looking for a true hike, this is not the hike for you, but this is a great location to view Waimea Canyon and to take amazing pictures. This is an out and back paved trail to an overlook area of Waimea Canyon.
Further Thoughts: Ashley and I really enjoyed viewing Waimea Canyon. It is truly an immense canyon and the overlook allows you to see breath taking views of this magnificent feature in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. When we return to this area we hope to take a longer hike around the canyon area. You cannot go wrong with hikes in this area as there are many trailheads located in this area. We stopped at several trailheads in this area and did small hikes, but not a hike that was long enough to do a write-up for. If you are looking for more good hikes near Waimea Canyon click
