November 1 – Explore the Plants on the Trail to Barbara’s Lake
9 – 11:30 a.m.
Join us on a wonderful morning walk to Orange County’s only natural lake while learning about our native California plant life. This 2-mile leisurely hike will be led by Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalists.

November 1, 21 – Wild North America – Toddler Program

Come find out what kinds of animals we find on our own continent! Class includes hands-on learning, fun crafts, and meeting zoo animals up close.

Visit with Preserve staff for story-telling fun! After a story, learn more about the natural history of the Bay through crafts, hands-on activities and nature walks. Come prepared for an exciting outdoor experience!

9 – 10:30 a.m.
Join our naturalists on a nature walk and learn about Trabuco Canyon animals and nature. Light to moderate walk on mostly paved roads. Meet at the Nature Center just inside the main entrance of the park.

November 2 – Dilley Geology and Natural History Hike
9 – 11 a.m.
Step back 25 million years in Orange County’s history to a time when the seas receded and the San Andreas Fault was just starting to form. With a Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist, discover the geological processes going on today and how they affect the natural landscape. This moderate 3-mile hike is over uneven, steep and sometimes rocky terrain with a 300-ft elevation gain.

November 2 – Caspers Park Foundation Meeting
9:30 – 11 a.m.
Interested in volunteering at Caspers Wilderness Park? Join our monthly meeting held in the Caspers Wilderness Park Nature Center. This is a great opportunity to learn just what volunteer’s do, as well as meet others who love nature, the outdoors, and preserving the park for all. Meeting starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by an informative lecture presented by guest speakers at 10 a.m.

November 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 – Redwood Grove Hike
9:30 – 11 a.m.
Join OC Parks' trained staff on an easy 1.1-mile hike to the park's Coastal Redwood grove. You will use your 5 senses to engage with nature as you stroll to the Redwoods. You will also have an opportunity to learn about our native plants along the way. The hike begins each Saturday and Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. from the park's Nature Center. Don't forget to visit our Nature Center when you are there, too!

November 2 – Walk in Our Wild Side Nature Walk
10 – 11 a.m.
Join a Park Naturalist on an easy walk approximately 1 mile long in our Natural Area. See birds, hawks, insects, butterflies, and native plants. Recommended: Hat, binoculars, drinking water, and comfortable shoes.

November 2-3 – Tot and Me Camp
10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Autumn is here, there is no better time to join your tot (ages 3-5 roughly) for a weekend of fun!  Camp will run Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. till 12 p.m. at Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park.  Our two days will include lessons about the season and feature a local animal!  Each Day will include songs, stories, hiking and crafts.  All activities are based on Kindergarten preparation skills and science.

November 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 – Ranger Led Campfire Program
8 – 9 p.m.
Join us Saturday night at the amphitheater for this Ranger led talk on local animal life, set to the glow of fire light. This event is only open to those camping at O’Neill Regional Park. No access for day use after sunset.

8 – 9 p.m.
Every Saturday night, join us for a campfire program that may include a slide presentation, wilderness safety, games and activities for children, animal adaptations, skins and skulls, a live animal demonstration and a chance to visit the Nature Center. Topics may vary weekly.

November 3 – Edible & Useful Plant Hike
8 – 11 a.m.
Early pioneers found their uses for local and introduced plants, and now science is finding out about potentially valuable medicines in our wild backyard. Learn about these edible and useful plants during a moderate, but steep, uneven 2-mile hike (400-ft. elevation gain) with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist, Karin Klein (author of 50 Hikes in Orange County).

The Nature Center is open the 1st Sunday of each month. Join a Park Ranger for a tour of the nature center and learn about local history, flora and fauna.

November 6 – Bimonthly Bird Walks
8 – 11 a.m.
Join Naturalist Mike Clayton on a bird walk at Riley Wilderness Park. All levels of birders welcome. As a wildlife sanctuary, Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park is a home to an abundant number of native plants and old groves of Western Sycamores and Coast Live Oaks which border the park’s two seasonally flowing creeks. The remaining land features rolling hills and canyons of Coastal Sage Scrub and grasslands. Come prepared for a morning of exploring this delightful park and its abundant bird life.

November 7 – Fitness Hike at Little Sycamore

Raise your heart rate and your spirits on this difficult, strenuous and fast-paced, 4.8-mile hike (400-ft. elevation gain) over very steep, uneven terrain with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers.

Come see Irvine Regional Park in a completely different setting, in the dark! Park rangers will lead a starlit hike showcasing the natural wonders that can only be seen at night. The Night Owl Hike will feature many fun activities, including: a visit to the nature center, a live animal presentation, hot cocoa and cookies, a hike through the wilderness area.

November 8 – Hoot ‘n Howling Night Hike 
5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Come see Carbon Canyon Regional Park in a completely different setting -- in the dark! Park rangers will lead a starlit hike showcasing the natural wonders that can only be seen at night. The Hoot ‘N Howling Night Hike will feature many fun activities, including a visit to the Nature Center; live animal presentation; hot cocoa and cookies; and a hike through the wilderness area.

The next night hikes at Carbon Canyon Regional Park will be the Ho Ho Ho Hike on Saturday, December 7, 2013 and the I Heart Hikes on Saturday, February 8, 2014.

November 9 – Saturday Fitness Hike
8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Enjoy a fresh, coastal breeze as you get your workout in the park on this strenuous fast-paced, 6.5-mile hike over steep and uneven terrain (1,100-ft elevation gain). Hike through lush Wood Canyon and up surrounding ridges with OC Parks Resource Specialist Rick Schaffer.

Come join park staff and our trail leaders by volunteering to assist with habitat restoration, non-native plant removal and trail work throughout Irvine Regional Park. Please wear jeans and durable shoes or boots. Park provides tools and gloves. Bring sunscreen, hat, snacks, and water.

November 9 – California Native Plant & Wildflower Hike

Learn to identify native plants with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist Nadine Nordstrom (author of the South Coast Wilderness Plant Identification Guide) on this moderate but very fast-paced, steep and rocky, 3.5-mile hike (600-ft. elevation gain).

Join us on this very enjoyable, easy 2-mile hike over moderate but uneven terrain (100-ft. elevation gain). Families welcome.  You will hike in one of the most diverse areas in the park, through a canopy of oaks past Barbara’s Lake and back.  Led by Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers.

November 10 – Second Sunday Restoration Program
9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Join Preserve staff and other volunteers in enhancing the Bay’s habitat for local wildlife. Activities may include non-native plant removal, planting natives, watering, trash cleanup and Butterfly Garden maintenance. No experience is necessary; water, snacks and tools are provided.

November 10 – Wilderness Walking Club

Enjoy a wonderful, moderate 3-mile walk (535-ft. elevation gain) through diverse coastal sage-scrub and riparian environments. Catch views of the canyons and mountain ranges from the ridge top and then walk down to Barbara’s Lake, a hidden jewel and the only natural lake in Orange County.

Engage your brain along with your body on a 4-mile hike (300-ft. elevation gain) over uneven and rocky terrain in beautiful Aliso & Wood Canyon while we share our favorite books. Come prepared to contribute a title or two and leave with the anticipation of some great new reads as well as a relaxed and exercised body. Led by a Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist and reader.

November 16 – Kids’ Fishing Clinic 
7 – 11 a.m.
OC Parks would like to invite you and your kids to a fun morning of fishing at Irvine Regional Park! This Kids’ Fishing Clinic (for ages 16 and under) is designed to teach kids how to fish, while giving them an opportunity to catch a few from our pond. November 16 – Geology Hike
8:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Enjoy unspoiled canyon views and learn about the geology of this area. The rocks and fossils reveal fascinating stories about the park’s ancient environments. We’ll examine a cave, several faults, sandstones from the Topanga and Vaqueros Formations, laminations in the sandstone, fossil scallops, modern and prehistoric landslides, and huge lava-filled fissures (or dikes) radiating across the landscape. This will be a 3.5-mile hike over steep and uneven terrain (650-ft. elevation gain).

November 16 – Casual Mountain Bike Ride

Join us on this beautiful, moderate mountain bike ride as we travel under a canopy of trees and shade on much of the trail. This 10-mile ride will be over uneven terrain with a 200-ft. elevation gain. Information and respect for the natural habitat will be included. November 23 – Long Distance Hike in the Back Country

Explore the beauty and diversity of two canyons, Little Sycamore and Laurel Canyon, in the backcountry of the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. This will be a strenuous, 7-mile hike (770-ft. elevation gain) over rocky and uneven terrain. We will hike through sycamore and oak woodlands, riparian habitats, coastal sage scrub, and open grassland. Participants should be fit and able to hike long distances.

Join park staff and other volunteers with enhancing Wieder Regional Park's natural resources. Located on the coastal bluffs of Huntington Beach, this unique habitat overlooks the Bolsa Chica Wetlands and Pacific Ocean. Activities may include non-native plant removal, trail maintenance or trash cleanup. No experience is necessary; water, snacks and tools are provided.

November 29, 30 – Irvine Park Railroad’s 18th Annual Christmas Train
5 - 9 p.m.
It’s the season, once again for Irvine Park Railroad’s annual Christmas Train. Come with family and friends and take this enchanting night ride through historic Irvine Regional Park to meet Santa Claus. The train will depart from the brightly-lit train station and drop you off at Santa’s Village. While waiting to meet Santa, you may purchase coffee, hot chocolate, freshly-popped popcorn and cookies from our Elf House Snack Bar to warm you up. A full kitchen menu is also available at the Train Station. Visitors may take their own pictures with Santa or you may purchase a picture taken by Irvine Park Railroad. Each 5” x 7” photo will be presented with an Irvine Park Railroad border and available for pickup shortly after being taken. After visiting with Santa, hop back aboard the train and enjoy the colorful Christmas lights and decorations, as well as the magical “Tunnel of Lights”, on the ride back to the station house. When visiting the Christmas Train, remember to dress warmly, bring your camera and arrive early to avoid crowds.
