Here are some highlights from the OC Parks February Calendar of events, if you are looking for hiking ideas or other outdoor events in the month of February, make sure to check our some of these great events!

February 1 – Wilderness Access Day – Limestone Canyon
8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Enjoy self-guided access in magnificent Limestone Canyon. Designated trails will be open for self-guided hiking, biking and equestrian use from 8am to 2pm. Parking is limited, however, and later attendees may be turned away from the event. Do not stop or park anywhere along Santiago Canyon Road. The entrance gate will not open until 8am. All participants MUST check in and complete their registration at the Augustine Staging Area prior to accessing the trail system. Trail routes vary in distance and level of difficulty. Please plan accordingly. Choices range from easy one-hour walks to strenuous 15-mile cardio hikes. Visiting “The Sinks” is a 9-mile round trip hike over moderate terrain.

February 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 – Redwood Grove Hike
9:30 – 11 a.m.
Join OC Parks' trained staff on an easy 1.1-mile hike to the park's Coastal Redwood grove. You will use your 5 senses to engage with nature as you stroll to the Redwoods. You will also have an opportunity to learn about our native plants along the way. The hike begins each Saturday and Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. from the park's Nature Center. Don't forget to visit our Nature Center when you are there, too!

February 1 – Caspers Park Foundation Meeting
9:30 – 11 a.m.
Interested in volunteering at Caspers Wilderness Park? Join our monthly meeting held in the Caspers Wilderness Park Nature Center. This is a great opportunity to learn just what volunteer’s do, as well as meet others who love nature, the outdoors, and preserving the park for all. Meeting starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by an informative lecture presented by guest speakers at 10 a.m. February speaker: Celia Kutcher- Native Plants.

February 1 – Fifth Annual Monarch Butterfly Day
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
OC Parks invites children and families to learn all about Monarch Butterflies and their natural habitat with an up close look at the magnificent creatures at the Fifth Annual Monarch Butterfly Day!

February 1 – Family Hike
3 – 5 p.m.
Join us on this very enjoyable, easy 2-mile hike over moderate but uneven terrain (100-ft. elevation gain). Starting at Nix Nature Center we will hike one of the most diverse areas of the park under a canopy of Oaks to Barbara’s Lake and back. Hike is led by Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers.

February 1 – Astronomy Program
5:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Come for a grand tour of the universe! Join Allan and other amateur astronomers to have a look in the telescopes to see Jupiter including four of its largest moons. Take a guided tour of the constellations and learn the myths and facts about the cosmos. Observe the wonders of the night sky including nebulas, galaxies, star clusters and double stars.

February 2 – Edible & Useful Plant Hike
8 – 11 a.m.
Native Americans and early pioneers found their uses for local and introduced plants, and now science is finding out about potentially valuable medicines in our wild backyard. Learn about these edible and useful plants during a moderate, but steep, uneven 3.5-mile hike (600-ft. elevation gain) with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist, Karin Klein (author of 50 Hikes in Orange County).

February 2 – Morning Birding at Laguna Niguel Regional Park 
8 – 11 a.m.
Join Laguna Canyon Foundation Volunteer Naturalists on this birding adventure. Spot native and winter resident birds on this slow and easy 2-mile walk through a landscaped suburban-parkland setting at Laguna Niguel Regional Park. Wear waterproof hiking or walking shoes (landscape is very wet); bring binoculars!

February 2 – A Walk in the Park
8:30 – 10 a.m.
Bring the family to view the landmark Aliso Creek restoration project and search for OC’s native wildlife on the Aliso Creek Trail East. This is a 2.5-mile level terrain, leisurely hike (50-ft. elevation gain) through riparian and grassland habitats. Led by OC Parks Resource Specialist Rick Schaffer.

February 2 – 1st Sunday Restoration Program at Talbert Nature Preserve 
9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Come join us for some R&R at Talbert Regional Park in Costa Mesa as we kick off the first community based Talbert Restoration & Revitalization Project. Learn about the native plants and wildlife of our Coastal zone. We will meet the 1st Sunday of each month 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the corner of 19th St. and Balboa Blvd. in Costa Mesa.

February 2, 9, 16, 23 – Nature Hike
9 – 10 a.m.
Join our Park Rangers Sunday mornings for an easy 1-mile hike on the Nature Trail. The trail takes visitors through grassland, oak woodland, riparian and sandy cactus scrub communities. Meet at Old Corral Day Use area. Rain will cancel hike.

February 2 – Nature Center Open

The Nature Center is open the first Sunday of each month. Join a Park Ranger for a tour of the nature center and learn about local history, flora and fauna.

February 3 – Knitting in Nature 
1 – 3 p.m.
Come out and knit or crochet in nature at beautiful Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. Whether you want to learn how to knit or have been knitting for years, come join in the stitching as we sit under the sycamores.  Help available to all knitters.  Bring your own project or try your hand at the project of the month that is great for beginners (Please email leader for materials needed for the project of the month, amy@lagunacanyon.org).

February 5, 19 – Ride with a Ranger  
8 – 11 a.m.
Join us for a scenic bike ride on the San Diego Creek Bike Path and Back Bay Loop Trail every other Wednesday from 8 to 11 a.m. This 14.3 mile intermediate, casual bike ride begins at William R. Mason Regional Park and travels through the Back Bay Loop Trail back to Mason.

February 6 – Fitness Hike at Canyon View

Raise your heart rate and your spirits on this strenuous, fast-paced, 5.5-mile hike over steep and uneven terrain (400-ft. elevation gain) with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers.

Come join park staff and our trail leaders by volunteering to assist with habitat restoration, non-native plant removal and trail work throughout Irvine Regional Park. Please wear jeans and durable shoes or boots. Park provides tools and gloves. Bring sunscreen, hat, snacks, and water.

Come see Carbon Canyon Regional Park in a completely different setting -- in the dark! Park rangers will lead a starlit hike showcasing the natural wonders that can only be seen at night. The I Heart Hike will feature many fun activities, including a visit to the Nature Center, live animal presentation, hot cocoa and cookies, and a hike through the wilderness area.

February 8 – World of Wolves – Learn All About Wolves!
6:30 – 8 p.m.
Get The Facts - not what folklore and movies want you to believe!  Did you know wild wolves are afraid of people?
World of Wolves is a fun and informative look at wolf behavior, biology, and social pack structure.  What do wolves eat and how often?  Why are wolves important to the ecosystem?  In this new updated program we’ll study close-up footage of Wolf Haven’s wolves howling, scent rolling and interacting with one another.  Plus - specifically for the youngsters - we’ll examine wolf, coyote, cougar, bobcat, grizzly bear and deer skulls and compare the difference between carnivores, omnivores and herbivores! The presentation also includes hands on portions with, tracks and antlers.

7 – 8 p.m.
Every Saturday night, join us for a campfire program that may include a slide presentation, wilderness safety, games and activities for children, animal adaptations, skins and skulls, a live animal demonstration and a chance to visit the Nature Center. Topics may vary weekly.

February 9 – Second Sunday Restoration Program
9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Join Preserve staff and other volunteers in enhancing the Bay’s habitat for local wildlife. Activities may include non-native plant removal, planting natives, watering, trash cleanup and Butterfly Garden maintenance. No experience is necessary; water, snacks and tools are provided.

February 11 – Dilley Loop Nature Hike

Get close to nature on this leisurely 2-mile hike (370-ft. elevation gain) over steep and uneven terrain as you spot plants and animals or maybe their tracks and signs along the way.

February 12 – Orange County Wildflowers Talk and Book Signing

Marvel at the diversity and behavior of our local wildflowers, as you enjoy the enthusiasm of renowned botanists Bob Allen and Fred Roberts, authors of the new book, Wildflowers of Orange County and the Santa Ana Mountains.  Take this opportunity to have your book signed – and support the Laguna Canyon Foundation by purchasing books for flower-loving friends.  This book has everything you ever wanted to know about our flowers!  Snacks provided!

February 15 – Paws Fur Pink 
7 – 11 a.m.
Irvine Regional Park will be hosting the Paws Fur Pink 5K Dog Run/Walk for Breast Cancer.  Come join us for the Hearty Hound 5K, the Dawdling Doodle walk or the Lassie Loop Lil’ Kids Dash.  There also will be a costume contest followed by an award ceremony for the day’s events.

February 15 – Keep It Wild Volunteer Day
8 – 11 a.m.
Come on out and help restore the wild lands we so enjoy! There’s no better way to start a Saturday morning than by joining Laguna Canyon Foundation and OC Parks staff in an invigorating project of non-native plant removal and/or planting native plants. Help us make a healthier environment for the native wildlife and for ourselves.

February 15 – Moulton Peak Geology Hike  
9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Join Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalists on this 4-mile Geology hike (600-ft. elevation gain) over steep and uneven terrain. Hike through the oak-filled woodland of Wood Canyon and continue to the park’s highest peak. We will pass by rock formations that tell of ancient floods, landslides and the building of a great shell-filled limestone reef. This hike is not for beginners! Bring water, hiking shoes (hiking poles suggested), snacks, and field guides of your choice and a sense of adventure!

February 15, 22 – Ranger Led Campfire Program

Join us Saturday night at the amphitheater for this Ranger led talk on local animal life, set to the glow of fire light. This event is only open to those camping at O’Neill Regional Park. No access for day use after sunset.

February 16 – Birding Basics with Ranger Portia

Explore the diverse bird populations of Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve with Ranger Portia on the third Sunday of the month. From seasonal migratory species to year-round residents, birders of all ages will enjoy a morning outdoors on these informative, yet fun-filled walks. The program will meet at the Constellation Street park entrance at 8:30 a.m. Come prepared for your birding adventure with binoculars, hat, sunscreen and appropriate footwear.

February 22 – Long Distance Hike in the Back Country
8 – 11:30 a.m.
Explore the beauty and diversity of two canyons, Little Sycamore and Laurel Canyon, in the backcountry of the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. This will be a strenuous, 7-mile hike (770-ft. elevation gain) over rocky and uneven terrain. We will hike through sycamore and oak woodlands, riparian habitats, coastal sage scrub, and open grassland. Participants should be fit and able to hike long distances. For your safety and comfort bring a suggested 2-3 liters of water, a hat, a hearty snack and proper hiking shoes.

February 23 – There’s More Than Meets The Eye At Clark Park

Have you ever wondered “Where are all the animals in the park?” but haven’t a clue?  See the park through the eyes of a Ranger and discover the hidden clues.  Find out what animals ruled the land in Clark Park 10,000 years ago and what animals rule today.  Visit with Rangers at a Share and Show Exhibit located at Clark Park’s Fossil Museum front patio from 1 to 3 p.m. and discover the secrets of Clark Park. A moderate 30 minute ¾ of a mile Ranger-led nature walk will follow.  The walk will begin at the Share and Show Exhibit, continue past Elephant and Camel Hill and up Camel Hill, the highest point of Clark Park before looping back to the starting point. Fun activities will be available for both children and adults
