4 – Birds of Mason Regional Park

Join an OC Parks volunteer and experienced
birdwatcher in a program about the birds of William R. Mason Regional Park. On
an easy walk of ½ mile around Mason, we will view and discuss the different
types of birds that visit the park during the late summer and early fall. We’ll
talk about migratory birds and why the park is important to them. We’ll find
out how to guess whether a songbird eats primarily insects or seeds. And we’ll
listen for the songs of some of our common local birds.
Water, sunscreen, a hat, and
comfortable shoes are recommended. Bring your binoculars to get better views of the birds!

OC Parks' trained staff on the first and third Saturday of the month for an
easy 1.1-mile hike to the park's Coastal Redwood grove. You
will use your 5 senses to engage with nature as you stroll to the
Redwoods. You will also have an opportunity to learn about our native
plants along the way. The hike begins each Saturday and Sunday
morning at 8:30 a.m. from the park's Nature Center. Don't forget to visit our
Nature Center when you are there, too!

Workshop for Talbert Habitat Restoration Plan

OC Parks will hold its first public
workshop for the Habitat Restoration Plan of Talbert Regional Park on Wednesday
Sept. 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Costa Mesa
Neighborhood Community Center located at 1845 Park Avenue in Costa Mesa.
Parking is available outside the Community Center. OC Parks’ consultants for
the Habitat Restoration Plan will be facilitating the workshop with the team of
experts developing this plan.
All are welcome to join this workshop
to learn and share about this exciting process toward restoring habitat at
Talbert Regional Park. This workshop is about natural habitat and public use,
so be sure to invite your friends and neighbors in the community.
The workshop will begin with an introduction by local agency staff
and representatives. Following will be an introduction of the consulting team
working on the Habitat Restoration Plan, and activities designed to gage public

Intermediate Mountain Bike Ride

ranger for an intermediate mountain bike ride at Riley Wilderness Park, which
encompasses 544 acres over 6.5 miles while enjoying majestic views. The
elevation gains on the ride are over 600 feet and participants should come
prepared with a bike suitable for rugged off-road trails, a helmet, gloves,
sturdy shoes, water, and a snack.

time when the seas receded and the San Andreas Fault was just starting to form.
With a Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist, discover the geologic
processes going on today and how they affect the natural landscape. This
moderate 3-mile hike is over uneven, steep and sometimes rocky terrain with a
300-ft elevation gain.

Come for a grand tour of the universe! Join Allan and other
amateur astronomers and have a look in the telescopes to see Mars and Saturn.
Take a guided tour of the summer constellations and learn the myths and facts
about the cosmos. Observe the wonders of the night sky including nebulas,
galaxies, star clusters and double stars.

September 24 – Museum Society Luncheon and Lecture
11:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The Old Courthouse Museum Society (OCMS) invites you to
their annual luncheon meeting and lecture on September 24, 2014 at 11:45 a.m. at
the Old Courthouse Museum. Local historian Phil Brigandi will discuss the
125th anniversary of Orange County, and the development of the new
exhibit, “Orange County Circa 1889” on display in the Old Courthouse Exhibit
Gallery. “Orange County Circa 1889” will be on display in the Old
Courthouse Third Floor Gallery until October 10, 2014.

September 28 – There’s More Than Meets The Eye At Clark Park
1 – 3:30 p.m.
Have you ever wondered “Where are all the animals in the park?”
but haven’t a clue? See the park through the eyes of a Ranger and discover the
hidden clues. Find out what animals ruled the land in Clark Park 10,000 years
ago and what animals rule today. Visit with Rangers at a Share and Show
Exhibit located at Clark Park’s Fossil Museum front patio from 1 to 3 p.m. and
discover the secrets of Clark Park. A moderate, 30–minute, ¾-of-a-mile,
Ranger-led nature walk will follow. The walk will begin at the Share and Show
Exhibit, continue past Elephant and Camel Hill and up Camel Hill, the highest
point of Clark Park before looping back to the starting point. Fun activities
will be available for both children and adults.
